USS Charleston

Description

Here is the completed model of the USS Charleston from ''On the Beach'' The last surviving American Submarine after a massive Nuclear escalation between the US and China.

The model itself wasn't all that hard to make, but the detailing was a pain in the *ss, partly becouse there arn't any good reference photo's online, partly becouse every sub is different, every blueprint differs. One has these ''fins'' on the side, another doesn't, one has 4 ''fins'' on the back, other 6... it keeps changing, and it also does in the movie. It keeps changing shape, the 3D model differs from the set prop (not sure if they used an actual submarine or just build a set to look like one) but it's cool nonetheless and so is the movie.

Made in 2000, the movie was set a few years in the future. When China invades and blockades Taiwan, the US interferes which escalates in a full scale Nuclear War. A submarine (the USS Charleston) with commander Towers and his crew on board survived the war deep under water and they sail south, when doing a radiation reading near Australia the radiation is low enough to surface, but Naval Command in Melbourne informs them that the radiation has been spilled at high altitudes and is drifting southwards from across the equator... It's just a matter of months from then on...

And yes, I know it is not 100% ''military accurate'' but that's my choice, if there where clear blueprints around, I might have made it 100% accurate! :P What do you guys think? :)

I would be interested to know how you made the shape of the hull. Tubular shapes in Sketchup still allude me. Could you make a simple tutorial?
